What does “BaZi” actually mean?
The word BaZi (八字) translates to “eight characters.” It comes from the fact that your destiny chart is made of four pairs of symbols — one pair for each pillar of your birth time. Each pair is written as two Chinese characters stacked together, so a complete chart holds exactly eight characters.
Because the chart is organized into four columns, the system is also widely known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理). These four pillars are your:
- Year Pillar — your birth year, linked to family heritage and your social environment in early life.
- Month Pillar — your birth month, tied to parents, career, and the season of your life story.
- Day Pillar — your birth day, the core of your identity. The top character of this pillar is called your Day Master.
- Hour Pillar — your birth hour, connected to children, later years, and your inner world.
The eight characters: stems and branches
Each pillar is formed by one Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and one Earthly Branch (地支) below. There are ten stems and twelve branches, and each one carries its own element and polarity:
- Heavenly Stems: Wood (甲, 乙), Fire (丙, 丁), Earth (戊, 己), Metal (庚, 辛), Water (壬, 癸)
- Earthly Branches: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig
Because the stems and branches rotate in fixed sixty-year cycles, every moment in time — and every person’s birth moment — gets a unique combination. That combination is your chart.
The five elements inside your chart
Every character in a BaZi chart belongs to one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. The balance of these elements across your eight characters shapes your natural temperament:
- Wood — growth, ambition, kindness, and the drive to expand.
- Fire — warmth, charisma, passion, and quick action.
- Earth — stability, reliability, nurturing, and practicality.
- Metal — clarity, discipline, precision, and inner strength.
